How do you cut a UHMW PE sheet?
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW) is one of the strongest plastic materials available and is used in everything from train cars to snowmobiles. You can purchase large plates, bars, and a variety of other forms of UHMW. Cutting UHMW is done with a standard saw. However, choosing the right blade is crucial to creating a smooth, ridged cutting line.
1. If the UHMW is light colored, use a tape measure and mark the cut location with a pencil. If the UHMW sheet is dark black or gray, mark the location with white chalk to make it visible.
1. Install a 12 - to 14-inch diameter carbide blade with 24 teeth into a table circular saw. Wear safety glasses to protect yourself from small pieces of plastic.
2. Place the UHMW sheet piece on the work surface and align the pencil or chalk line in front of the circular saw blade. Turn on the chainsaw. Cut along the specified line. Keep your hands away from the saw blade when performing this operation.
3. Continue pushing the UHMW through the saw blade until you get two pieces. According to American Plastics Depot, the appropriate feed rate is approximately 10 to 40 feet per minute.
4. Remove the UHMW and turn off the chainsaw before removing the safety glasses.
